About Virginia Wedding Photographer | Ian Ivey

My inquisitive approach to photography comes from the same traits that served me well as a lawyer. I work a wedding like an investigator, not a photojournalist. Pure photojournalism is detatched from the scene, observing without influencing. Photojournalism itself is sterile when properly done.
By contrast, my photography is very personal. I prefer to talk with people before photographing them, where possible. My approach is respectful, discrete, and professional, so as to be unobtrusive and personal at the same time. This allows me to learn about the personalities and relationships that my clients value, and thus to anticipate the moments that, in print, will spark conversations and storytelling for decades.
My signature images prompt two reactions. Viewers not familiar with the people in the photos ask what on earth is going on; those in the know can't wait to tell the story behind the image.
For those who also want conventional coverage, I stitch together my signature images from a wedding with conventional imagery. But conventional imagery is not the principal reason you'll hire me; it merely satisfies a basic expectation, allowing you to acquire something unusual.
This "unusual" consists of a small, leather-bound album of character-study images. Each one depicts not merely a face, but a personality, or a relationship, or a scene that demands storytelling. My skill lies in perceiving and depicting the relationships and personalities that are important to my clients.
I know I've succeeded when a client looks at an image and happily, impulsively, launches into an explanation.

Please hit the "contact" tab, above, to inquire about booking. I generally photograph weddings in the DC Metro area (Maryland, DC, Northern Virginia), but do travel.
